The middle of July is birthday central here at Charm City Cakes. What happens when cake decorators make birthday cakes for each other? Last week the gang surprised me with an homage to my pet cockatiel: a beach-tastic birdie, complete with pink bikini and (not shown) a butterfly tramp stamp tattoo on her back.
Not to be outdone, exactly seven days later on Mary Smith’s birthday the crew created a replica of her cat, complete with Belle and Sebastian record, signature Mary Smith humongous hoop earrings, and an Orange and Mac and Cheese (her lunch of choice).
Better than your average office sheet cake, to be sure! It’s one of the nice perks of working here.
For those about to rock, we salute you: Duff’s band, so i had to, will be playing this Saturday night at the Tortoise and Hare in Arlington, Virginia. The show starts at 8:00, and the bar is at 567 South 23rd Street.
I simply must give a shout out to Jacob over at Food Network Addict for sending me a blog-in-tine of love this week. The feeling is torridly mutual, my sweet!
In other news, to quote Connie Francis, V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N! As of 5:00 PM on Friday we are closed for two weeks of glorious uninterrupted time off. We will re-open bright eyed and bushy tailed on Monday, August 11th. Today is the last day of filming for season 5 of "Ace of Cakes", our beloved crew is packing up for their summer break. They will return to our arms in late September to commence filming season (holy crap) 6.
This vacation is a first for myself, Jess and Adrienne (the administrative triumvirate here at CCC) – usually we never get a real break because time off just means nine times as much work when we get back, but this time Duff has insisted we turn off the phones and to shut down our website contact us page. It’s pretty exciting to actually get some rest and not deal with buckets of work upon our return. I’m so, so excited.
The bakery kids are taking all kinds of awesome trips while we’re closed, including Mexico, Colorado, Seattle, Austin, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland, New York, North Carolina, Montreal, Long Island, and lots of miles in between. Be on the lookout, America! We’re all over the place for the next 2 weeks.
